3G is the newer cellphone technology, for transferring data.  According to Apple it is it 2.4x faster than EDGE.  The main downfall with of 3G is that it uses a lot of battery power.  EDGE, the older technology, is sort of like a slow dial-up connection.  While 3G is like a slow broadband connection.  While 3G won’t give you the lightning fast downloads that you get on your home internet connection it will be pack a lot of punch for your cell phone.

The main differences (visually) between the iPhone and the iPhone 3g is the the black or white (8 gig and 16 gig respectively) back plastic cover.  That’s right, Apple did away with the back metal cover.

Another major cosmetic update is the flush headphone jack.  Now users can use any type of headphones with their iphones.

Besides the above mentioned, nothing has really changed visually.
